DEPRESSION is a common mood disorder. It results from stressful events such as death of a loved one, serious accident, break-ups, pressure at work, isolation, sudden loss of employment, climate, loneliness, abusive or unhealthy relationships, medical illness or surgery, alcohol and substance abuse.

Genes can also play a major role of depression triggers. There are also people who are at risk of becoming depressive because of their personality. Some cannot take rejections and criticisms very well. Some have a low self-esteem, perfectionist and worrisome.

Symptoms of depression include marked changes in sleeping and eating patterns, headache, moodiness, fatigue, weight loss, social withdrawal, loss of concentration, hopelessness, feelings of guilt, worthlessness and will to live.

The World Health Organization reports that more than 350 million people of all ages are suffering from depression.

To make matters worse, over 90 % of people who die by suicide have a clinical depression.

Because of this, depression is now one of the leading causes of death in the world. It is a silent killer that nobody notices but can affect you or your loved ones.

I’m listing a few helpful tips that may help you (or someone you know) if you’re in a depressive state.

Talk to trusted person/s.

Sometimes, a person’s ego can get in the way of bouncing back to life again. It is not shameful to talk about your problems and ask for advice. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It’s healthier to share your feelings and emotions. There is a reason why man is not alone. There is a reason why we have a family and friends. It’s because they are here to listen to us and lend us a hand in times of trouble. A good support system can help beat depression.



Take care of pet.

There are many scientific studies that prove people who have pets are less likely to suffer from depression. It’s because taking care of pet forces them to be active or get out of the house and spend time with their pets.

Pet interaction also makes people become more positive in life. When owners look at their pets, their body produces oxytocin, a feel good chemical, that makes them happy. Having pets also decreases the risk of a heart attack and eliminates stress.



Join a club and other social activities.

Generally, when a person is depressed, his line of thinking is, “It’s better to be alone.” But he does not realized that being alone and isolated from the crowd will make him feel more depressed.

There’s more to life than sitting alone in the room and crying. One can join a club at school, a church committee or support group for depression. A person can also go to the mall, watch movies, play sports, and dine out with family and friends. What a person must do is get out of his shell and be around with positive people.


Take care of yourself.

It has been said a thousand times that eating certain kinds of food have a direct impact on our mood. Have a balanced meal every day and refrain from eating unhealthy foods such as chips and canned goods.

Bananas and chocolates have high levels of tryptophan, which is converted into serotonin, the happy-mood brain neurotransmitter, which can help ease moodiness.

Aside from eating healthy food, do some exercises. It relieves stress and boosts a happy spirit.

Sleep 6 to 8 hours a day. Have a body massage once a week or twice a month. Sleeping and massage helps our body to relax and our mind to think well.

Taking care of oneself is not just all about eating right and sleeping right. A depressed person should stop thinking negatively. Instead, one must be optimistic and persistent that he can move on from all these bad events or tragedies in life.





Meditate and pray

Contemplating and reflecting on to life experiences can help a person realize what he did wrong. God gives a person a chance or chances so that one can rectify the situation. It’s not too late to ask for God’s guidance. God can help us cope up with depression. We can always emerge as a survivor.

There’s a saying that goes, “The amazing thing about life is that you choose what you allow in it. You choose how things affect you. You choose how you react. Happiness is a choice. Make it.” That is why, don’t ever ever let depression drain your dreams, hopes and energy. While it is true that overcoming it is not easy and fast but it is possible. Note that as long as we are alive, it’s not yet too late to bounce back in life. We can always beat depression if we choose positivity.

Depression can happen to anyone. The key is to start recovering and just keep going. We must accept that bad events happen in our life but it’s not the end of the world for us. Healing takes time and it commences on the moment that we make positive choices in our life.
