FIRST SHOT

It was a year ago when my dog bit me and I received my first shot of anti-rabies vaccine. Actually, di naman yun sinasadya ni Clark. Believe it or not, nagulat din si Clark kung bakit niya ko nakagat. Nag-aaway kasi sila nila ni Max, or more of nagpapatayan na sila over a territorial issue and I had to intervene. He looked surprised and very sorry that he bit me.

After getting mad for a few seconds, I patted his head pero deep inside, kinakabahan ako kasi ang alam ko, may sakit si Clark nung araw na yun. One day na siyang nagfa-fasting for no apparent reason so I don’t know if it’s a sign na may rabies na ang aso ko. Ang alam ko lang kasi he has distemper. Nevertheless, I let my hand bled and washed it thoroughly.

I never told my family na nakagat ako ni Clark. Katakot-takot na sermon na naman ang matatanggap ko sa kanila so I kept to myself until one Thursday night, napadaan ako sa Manggahan and I saw Marianne at Leo’s house. I was about to go home that time but I seriously missed Marianne and Leo so I decided to stop by. I told her that I don’t have any money at all (I had naman but I’m saving it for school.) at lalo niya kong pinagalitan kasi whether or not may rabies si Clark o wala, I should have gone to the doctor and have an anti-rabies shot. May point naman si Marianne and I was being so stubborn. But then she convinced me that it was not the first time that a dog bit me, actually, all of our family dogs bit me so kahit nga naman walang rabies si Clark, may possibility na may rabies na ang katawan ko noon pa and it’s only a matter of time or another rabies dose and the virus might be triggered. Geek na geek. Nerd na kung nerd ang reasons but there are a lot of scientific studies and research about these cases.

Afterwards, Marianne showed me a pamphlet and said that sa QC Hall ay may libreng shots for rabies. I took the pamphlet and read it. And she made me promise that the next time I see her, dapat may injection na ko or else, magagalit siya nang bongga. I said yes but remained skeptical. I never really believe her na may libreng shots ang government. Don’t get me wrong, I believe Marianne, I just don’t believe the government. So I went home and researched the number of the health department ng city hall.

The next day, I called and true enough, libre nga! No hassle! If only they knew this, I’m sure, baka maloka sila dahil walang pila!

I was number 17 sa napakaikling pila. I bought a 6 pesos syringe kay Ate sa may tabi and then, presto, after 5 minutes, my number was called! I went inside and got shot.

Pakiramdam ko and this is serious, may ginagawa naman pala ang government for the poor and needy. I saved a lot of money kasi libre ang first and fourth shot.

I have to thank my friend, Marianne, for telling me about this. For literally, saving my life and not just saving my life but because of her, I found out the story of Eduardo Sese which was nakasulat sa pamphlet ng clinic. Dun ko nalaman na nakahawa ng rabies ang taong ito and it’s more than a hundred people and the government spent more than half a million just to contained the situation. Now, maybe you’re thinking anong connect nitong Eduardo Sese na to sa buhay ko. Well, yun pala ang magiging first pitch ko years later sa Magpakailanman. It became my first researched story and up to now, I still cannot believe it. It’s not luck. It’s not nagkataon but it’s more of it is written. Things in life happen for a reason. I may not understand the significance of me na nag-aawat ng away-aso or Clark biting me or Marianne nagging me to get a shot or me following her orders but now, I do understand. It’s because one day, may darating na question and I will be able to answer it because somewhere in my life before, I already read the answer.
